Hurricane Sandy Makes Landfall Near Santiago de Cuba

At 1:25am, the National Hurricane Center released a tropical cyclone update declaring that Sandy made landfall with winds of 110mph just 5 miles from one of Cuba’s largest cities, Santiago de Cuba. The final pressure was 957mb, which was the lowest of the season. Below is a map of the most recent recon passes with center fixes in white and the current location of Sandy noted in the red marker. You should expect damage from the nearly major hurricane to come from that city as the sun rises and Sandy pulls away tomorrow morning. No watches or warnings were changed with this advisory, but I expect the hurricane warning for Jamaica and the TS warning for Haiti to be dropped at 5am.
